901 Today

Good morning, Memphis! ☀️

Today is September 21. That might look like a regular Monday. But if you love music, it's kind of a big day.

Earth, Wind & Fire's 1978 hit song "September" asks, "Do you remember, the 21st night of September?" Well — today is that day!

Fans call today "Earth, Wind & Fire Day." It's not an official holiday, just a great excuse to jam out to the official video with us.

We've also got:

  • a new seafood spot in Bartlett

  • a 100-vendor night market

  • sunflowers for a good cause

  • and a Target landing in Millington.

Let's get into it.

Restaurant of the Week

🦐 Restaurant of the Week: Captain Kal's Seafood Boils in Bartlett

Captain Kal’s Market & Steamer

Starting today, we're spotlighting one already-open Memphis restaurant every week — and our first pick is Captain Kal's Seafood Market & Steamer on Memphis-Arlington Road in Bartlett.

  • 🍤 Boil it your way. Pick your seafood (shrimp, crawfish, crab legs, and more) and they steam it in a bag with the sauce and spice level you choose. Try the Shrimp Lover's Platter, the Classic Snow Crab Platter, or the Lobster Grilled Cheese.

  • 📍 New to the 901. Captain Kal's is a fresh addition to Bartlett's food scene, already picking up good early reviews. They're open Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday-Monday, noon-7 p.m.

Events

🌻 Silo Square's Sunflower Festival Benefits Make-A-Wish

Silo Square Sunflower Festival

The Silo Square Sunflower Festival returns to Southaven on Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

  • 🚗 Cars for a cause. Owners of classic cars (1981 or older) can enter the car show for $25, and that money goes straight to Make-A-Wish Mid-South.

  • 🌻 More than it sounds. There's no sunflower field to walk through, but you'll find vendors, live music, food trucks, and a giant sunflower mural perfect for photos.

🎯 Target's Retail Boom Is Landing in Millington

Target.Com

Target is growing in our area, with a new store headed to Millington.

  • 🛒 Millington's retail boom. Millington's Planning Commission approved plans for almost 200,000 square feet of new retail, including a Target and an Academy Sports + Outdoors. City leaders call it hitting the bullseye on years of planning.

  • 🎯 Mississippi update, too. Target already opened a new store in Olive Branch this summer, and another is coming to Tupelo in the next couple of years — a bit farther down the road, but good to know.
